I’m relatively new to Maz, having first visited in 2008 on a whim (“Let’s go somewhere on the west coast with golf”). Although DW & I now rent in Centro year round, we’re only here about six months. We gravitated to Centro after dinner on the Plaza our first trip. My posts will deal primarily with Centro and I’d like to start with some comments on Cheryl Gaudet, Canadian singer-songwriter extraordinaire and Centro resident whose Friday Casa Lucila (at the south end of the Malecon) gig is not to be missed.
Friday’s performance was one of her best: Covers of Beatles, Neil Young, CSN&Y, Carlie Simon, you name it; and of course, a few of her own compositions as well (“Raining on the Moon” and “Mazatlan Sunset” are two of her many crowd favorites). That another well-known local musician was in the audience having a good time spoke volumes.
And Casa Lucila has really improved food and service since we began going on November 11, our first day here this trip. Gone are the long wait times thanks to Marie and Sammy (I might not be the best at spelling Mexican names), and whatever improvements were made in the kitchen. It’s an eight room boutique hotel, and I think having to deal with 30 or 40 thirsty and hungry Cheryl devotees at the same time presented a huge challenge early on. But not to worry, it’s all good now.
- Nights are cooler now, the open courtyard where Cheryl sets up gets a little brisk and there’s a good breeze when the doors to the lobby are open, bring layers.
- The corn soup is to die for.
- The Caesar Salad, Puntanesca, Chicken and Fish & Chips our group ate Friday were all good; in fact, I haven’t heard any recent complaints about any of the menu selections.
- They have 2/1 Happy hour in the bar from 4:00 to 6:00, and Cheryl goes on right after that (drinks are regular price in the courtyard, but you can bring one – or two??? – from the bar when you move). 2/1 does not include wine.
- Do make a resie.
